Studio Swing publishes this comparison and offers Shopify design and development. We appear first to make that commercial interest clear. The order is not a ranking. Provider descriptions reflect their public offers, while the fit recommendations are our judgment. We have not independently tested their delivery or client results.

Choosing a Shopify provider starts with identifying what must change in your store. An existing theme may need better product information and editable sections. A migration may require moving data, mapping old addresses and reconnecting operations. A custom feature may depend on an app, an integration or development of its own.

This comparison is for merchants choosing someone to build or improve a Shopify store. If you are still deciding whether Shopify is the right platform, begin with our ecommerce platform guide. The provider should fit both the work and the way your team will run the store afterwards.

Studio Swing: plan the store and choose the amount of custom work

We offer new Shopify stores, existing-theme customisation, custom themes and redesigns. We review your products, apps, operations and editing needs before choosing the route. The deliverables in our service offer include theme code, editable sections, an app list and planned collections, product pages, cart and checkout.

For an existing store, we list templates, apps, review displays, tracking and important addresses before changes. Our launch work includes test orders and redirect checks. Your Shopify owner account stays yours; collaborator access is granted and removable. Third-party plans, apps and licences retain their own terms.

Scope and quote are agreed in writing. Care after launch is separate. Our public examples are original concepts, not client work or working Shopify builds. They demonstrate design decisions, not proven store outcomes.

Consider us when: you want the product information, shopping experience and build planned together, with responsibilities and handover settled before work.

Ask us: which theme route fits, what your team can edit, and what evidence will demonstrate that the agreed store functions work?

See our Shopify service.

Absolute Web: Shopify development with wider commerce connections

Absolute Web's Shopify offer includes store setup, theme and app development, B2B solutions, migrations and integrations. It also describes headless/PWA work. Those are different architectures and scopes, rather than features every store needs. Absolute Web Shopify services.

Consider Absolute Web when: the project involves substantial custom functionality or connections between the store and other business systems.

Ask Absolute Web: who specifies, builds and supports each connection? Confirm whether the proposal covers data cleanup, migration testing, code handover, owner accounts and continued support. Request a reason for any architecture that adds another system for your team to maintain.

Swanky: Shopify Plus migration and integration work

Swanky's migration offer describes discovery, a migration roadmap, data transfer and page redirects. Its integration service covers connections between Shopify and systems for inventory, customer records and other operational data, including middleware. Swanky migration and integrations.

Its development service also describes retainer work for maintenance, troubleshooting, features and quality checks. Swanky development.

Consider Swanky when: moving to Shopify Plus requires more than a new storefront and involves existing data and connected operations.

Ask Swanky: what will move, what cannot move unchanged, how old addresses are tested, and who handles an integration problem after launch? Agree the included support and handover terms rather than assuming the retainer is part of the build.

Underwaterpistol: custom Shopify Plus engineering

Underwaterpistol describes custom themes, API-based development, performance reviews, feature updates and ongoing maintenance. Its technology consultancy examines the surrounding Shopify systems, including customer records, inventory, payments and analytics. Underwaterpistol development and technology consultancy.

Consider Underwaterpistol when: you need specialist development for a Shopify Plus store and decisions about the systems around it.

Ask Underwaterpistol: which requirements use standard platform features, which need apps and which need custom code? Request the maintenance responsibility and licence costs for each proposed dependency, together with ownership and handover terms.

Why Matters: bounded help and ongoing packages

Why Matters publishes Shopify build and support packages, including blocks of design/development time and monthly arrangements. Its packages distinguish smaller ongoing changes from individually quoted work such as Shopify Plus builds and migrations. Why Matters packages.

Consider Why Matters when: your immediate need is a defined piece of work or a recurring stream of changes, rather than an assumed full rebuild.

Ask Why Matters: what fits the selected package, how work is prioritised, and which catalogue, theme or integration tasks cost extra? Confirm ownership, handover and the limits of any support or development guarantee in writing.

A theme change and a store migration need different proposals

Imagine a fictional outdoor-equipment shop already on Shopify. Staff can update products, but shoppers struggle to compare weights and sizes. The owner wants useful filters, clearer product information and sections staff can maintain.

The first proposal should explain the product data and theme changes needed. Studio Swing's planning/theme offer and Why Matters' bounded support model are possible starting points to investigate. If the requirements need custom Shopify Plus functionality, Underwaterpistol or Absolute Web may belong on the shortlist. The existing store does not automatically need a new platform or a completely custom theme.

Now imagine the same shop moving from another platform, with inventory held in a separate system. That adds data mapping, integration, old addresses, tracking and launch coordination. Swanky's stated migration and integration scope is directly relevant. Absolute Web's Shopify offer also covers migration and integrations. Other candidates should explain the required responsibilities in their proposal before you compare them on price.

These examples are hypothetical. We have not received proposals from these providers, and the scenarios do not imply that any candidate accepts the project or has tested its requirements.

Inspect what changes, what moves and what your team receives

A useful Shopify proposal should let you check these decisions:

  • Theme route: existing theme, customised theme or custom theme, with the reason for that choice and the editing your team needs.
  • Data and apps: which products, variants, images, reviews and other records move; which apps remain; who pays their charges.
  • Old addresses: which stay, which redirect and how the destinations are checked. A migration cannot guarantee unchanged search traffic.
  • Store tests: the agreed product, cart, payment and confirmation paths, with responsibilities for test orders and connected systems.
  • Handover: owner account, collaborator access, theme code, editable sections, app inventory, licences and documentation.
  • Aftercare: initial corrections, ongoing maintenance and feature work, each with its own responsibilities and terms.

Use our Shopify migration guide to prepare questions about an existing store. For the broader buying experience, our product-page guide explains the information shoppers need before they choose.

Request a proposal around your store

Share your current store, the problems you want to solve, the products and variants involved, and the apps or systems you depend on. Show what your team must be able to edit. Ask providers to separate the build, licences, apps, migration and ongoing work so you can compare the same responsibilities.

Our Shopify cost guide explains why a build quote and running costs need separate attention.

If you want Studio Swing to review the route with you, tell us what you sell, share your current store if you have one, and say what you want to change. We agree the scope and quote before work starts.

Discuss your project.
